Stuck for 127 Hours: Aron Ralston’s Self-Amputation Survival Story In April 2003, mountaineer Aron Ralston became trapped in Bluejohn Canyon, Utah, when a boulder pinned his right arm. After five days without rescue, he amputated his arm with a multi-tool to free himself. On May 1, his sixth day, he rappelled 65 feet and hiked until he found help. That same day a search-and-rescue helicopter flew him to St. Mary’s Hospital, making his ordeal one of history’s most remarkable survival stories.
