In 1996 Larry Page and Sergey Brin created Backrub at Stanford University, introducing the idea of ranking web pages by links rather than keywords. In 1998 they incorporated Google in a Menlo Park garage rented from Susan Wojcicki, running the service on low-cost servers that outperformed existing search engines. In 1999 the company moved to Palo Alto as usage surged and Google became the fastest, most reliable way to navigate the internet. It soon transformed search into the foundation of the digital age and expanded into Gmail, Maps, and YouTube. By 2025 Google is headquartered at the Googleplex in Mountain View, a global center for information technology and one of the most influential companies in history.
